SSD is still in demand despite the high-priced
For most consumers, the media storage SSD (solid state drive) is still too expensive when compared with HDD (hard disk drive). However, other consumers are apparently still buying SDD.
Evidently, the manufacturers of notebook computers are still aggressively releasing SSD storage of media. Noted, Dell Inc. became one of the producers of media notebook computer that offers a storage capacity of 256 GB SSD in January 2009. In May 2009, Toshiba Corp. to pursue with the release of notebooks equipped with a capacity of 512 GB SSD.
Do not want to fall behind, Apple Inc., notebook also offers a large capacity SSD. In April 2010, Apple also released a high-performance notebook equipped MacBook Pro 512 GB SDD. Research firm iSuppli Corp. Estimates is that up to five years SSD prices are still far more expensive than similar large-capacity HDD. However, iSuppli believes, some consumers in the world will still buy the SSD. iSuppli even believed, in 2012 as many as 35 percent of all the latest notebook in the world will be built using SSD storage media, replacing the HDD.
iSuppli explains, in 2008 global sales of SSD generate revenue of about USD127 million. In 2009, that number soared to USD883 million. On the volume side, the global SSD sales in 2008 reached only 1.4 million units. In 2009, the figure is able to penetrate the 5.8 million units. iSuppli added, the global SSD revenue will increase an average of 142.8 percent per year from 2008 until 2013, so on the global SSD revenue in 2013 will reach USD10, 8 billion.
At the same time, sales volume will grow an average of 115.6 per cent per annum so that the global SSD sales in 2013 will reach 65.2 million units. SSD allure strong so that consumers were still buying the SSD on the global financial crisis in 2009. Research firm International Data Corp. (IDC) found that in 2009 global sales volume SSD is able to break the 11 million units. This means that SSD sales volume in 2009 increased by approximately 14 percent compared to 2008.
Because SSD sales to increase, even in times of crisis like in 2009, IDC believes sales of SSD will continue until 2013.
“From 2008 until 2013, the global SSD sales volume increased by an average of 54 percent per year. The increase in sales volume is accompanied by income growth,” said Manager Components HDD & SSD IDC Research Jeff Janukowicz.
Insights research firm Forward rate, the price of SSD is indeed a cursory look more expensive than HDDs. Forward Insights, however asserted, actually cheaper than SSD because SSD HDD has aged much longer than the HDD.
The advantage of SSD HDD is not only by increasing performance and saving energy consumption. But it is also the total cost of ownership for computers that use SSD to be more durable than the computers that use the HDD,” said Gregory Wong, President of Forward Insights.
Since 2009, rapidly rose in popularity because of the SSD SSD manufacturers are launching aggressive marketing campaigns. One of the evidence, the world’s largest producer of SSDs Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. willingly World Cyber Games competition performance in 2009, by planting SSD on a computer that is used in a race that world-class game.
Samsung SSD was planted in a special computer game called Area-51 produced Alienware Corp., which is a specialist manufacturer of high performance computers. 128 GB capacity, Samsung SSD is able to significantly increase the computer speed Area-51 when used to play games that are wasteful of computing resources.
